SUMMARY:Friday Night Live - UPPAA Pre-Conference Networking\, Social Mixer\, and Open Mic Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the much-lauded UPPAA Pre-Conference experience from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Crib\, a cozy and comfortable coffeehouse with lots of seating located at 401 N. 3rd St. just steps from the Peter White Public Library. Members can pre-register for this event for $12/person or $15 in cash (only) at the door. You may bring a guest as well\, but they will also have to pay to attend. \nDownstairs: Appetizers\, Drinks\, and Networking\nLight appetizers will be served\, and a cash bar will be available. The cover charge helps defray the costs of appetizers and rental of The Crib. Appetizers will include Mini-Pasties from Irontown Pasties in Negaunee as well as other standard offerings such dip\, meat & cheeses\, veggies\, and crackers all catered by the Northwoods Test Kitchen of Marquette.\nIn the downstairs\, a wide variety of coffee\, tea\, and other non-alcoholic drinks will be available as well as a wide variety of local and imported beers and ciders. White wines will also be available. The downstairs area will be for casual networking—meeting new friends and old! The downstairs is handicapped accessible. \nUpstairs: An Open Mic Night\nThe Open Mic night will be running on the 2nd floor starting at 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.\nJodi Perras will be taking down names at the door\, so please check in with her to participate.\nOpen mics allow poets and storytellers—both seasoned and emerging—to share their work in a\nsafe and welcoming space. Bring something you’ve already published or something you’re still\nworking on. We’ll provide a podium\, lapel mic\, and a friendly audience. You’ll provide your best\nYooper creativity.\nAll performance styles and genres are welcome including poetry\, monologue\, essay\, short story\, humor\, singers/songwriters\, and more. Please limit your piece or writing sample to 3–5 minutes (approximately 450–750\nwords). (We will have a timer!) Amplified sound will be provided for those who might be\nhearing impaired. Note: the upstairs is not handicapped accessible

DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the 2025 UPPAA Spring Conference and simultaneous Young Writers Storytelling Workshop at the Peter White Public Library in downtown Marquette\, Michigan.  If you’ve never been to our Spring Conference\, you’re in for a treat of not only smart\, experienced\, and helpful speakers but a one-of-a-kind fellowship and networking with your fellow yooper writers! \nWe have some dynamite speakers lined up: \n\nMichael Carrier\, author of more than 18 crime/thriller novels with U.P. connections will be our keynote speaker\nHow to Do Submissions for Poetry Anthologies with Michael Peach\nHow to Research Your True Crime Nonfiction with Rod Sadler\nAddressing the Needs of Native Americans in Literature with Sharon Brunner\nCreating Compelling Characters with Sue Harrison\n21st Century Goals for Success for Writers and Readers with Sylvia Hubbard \nSelf-Publishing 101 with Tyler Tichelaar\n\nLast but not least\, we sure hope you can join us again for Friday Night Networking + Open Mic night.  Our first ever Friday night event got rave reviews. \nWe’re revamping the Young Writer’s Storytelling Workshop to include a variety of afternoon breakout choices instead of the single-track we did in 2024 so it will be a completely new experience for the attendees in grades 5 to 12 from around the U.P.  We’re still finalizing the speakers for this event. \nLook for an announcement covering both events in detail in the Winter 2025 Newsletter to be published in late January 2025.
