Gretchen Preston has passed on to me this call for presenters at Young
Authors. Contact information below:
The Marquette-Alger Young Authors’ Conference began with an idea to
build literacy and authorship within our community. It started with a
handful of educators and 347 first through sixth grade children. Over
the past 39 years, the conference has grown to include 13 schools and
about 3,000 children, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The
conference takes place over four days each May at Northern Michigan
University, but literacy activities extend throughout the whole school
year. The activities involve reading, researching, writing,
illustrating, sharing, and finally publishing a book as a culminating
project.
A day at the Young Authors’ Conference consists of four events. Students
will attend the author presentation, celebrate their own writing during
a book-sharing session, and attend a “special” class lead by a local
presenter. Students will also enjoy lunch at Northern Michigan
University’s Marketplace. It is a fun and busy day for all!
There are many local businesses, authors, musicians, and other talented
people who are presenters at Young Authors. Presenters sessions last
about 45 minutes. There are three sessions per day. Presenters can
present one session or however many sessions will work for them. We are
hoping to get more U.P. Authors as presenters next year. If you are
interested in being a presenter Please email me Katie Holt at
katiehlt@hotmail.com. I will put you on our list to contact you when we
begin planning next years conference. We will begin planning Young
Authors in September and will start contacting presenters in January.
